Can I start The Bay Walk on any day of the week?

In principal The Bay Walk is set up as a Long Weekend Walk starting on Friday and ending on Monday. The flexibility in starting day depends on the package that you choose. In that way our Basic Package shows some more flexibility. Our All-Inclusive Package however is only available as a Long Weekend Walk with Friday as starting day. This allows us to group the transports and flights between Nelson and Golden Bay together with the meal preparations that are all included in this package.

Do I need a good walking condition?

To make The Bay Walk a memorable and fully enjoyable walking experience, we recommend a good general condition. Try to practice some longer walks before so your muscles and joints have adapted to the walking sport. All tracks are in good condition but require some climbing and descending. Really steep parts are exceptional. The most demanding part of The Bay Walk is situated on day 2 where the soft sand on the beaches and on the sand dunes together with the ever-present wind, makes this walk that little bit more challenging. Please note that you will walk each day for about 4-6 hours. Walking poles will surely help for those with weaker knees or ankles.

Is there any cell phone coverage?

A very good broadband wifi network is available at our lodge. Cell phone coverage from the lodge is also very good and that on all national networks. During the walks there is almost no cell phone coverage at all. Only on a couple of locations you will be able to send a text message. A personal locator beacon is a handy tool but not essential.

Are there any bad weather alternatives?

We are surrounded by nature what means that dry weather is essential to fully enjoy our wonderful environment. All the walks are on safe and well-maintained tracks that are even accessible on a rainy day. If we feel it is unsafe or unenjoyable to walk, we will offer shorter walking options or alternatives like a fishing trip to our salmon farm or an art & taste tour to colourful Takaka. Do I need to share accommodation?

No, there is no need to share bedrooms or bathroom facilities. There is a possibility you may share our lodge with other walkers but each couple or individual will occupy his/her own luxe Suite with Ensuite and private deck. In the panoramic lounge of our lodge you will meet our other guests for our briefings, our welcome drink on day 1, the 2-course dinner on day 3 and the gourmet breakfast on day 4. Outdoors there is plenty of space to relax privately or to join with our other guests in one of our outdoor entertainment areas.

Can I bring my own food/drinks or buy local to prepare my own meals?

If you are opting for our cheaper Silver Walking Package without catering, you can use our guest kitchenette (2-pit cooktop, barbecue, fridge, freezer & microwave) and the tea and coffee facilities in your Suite to prepare your own meals. The FreshChoice supermarket in Takaka (10km) is your best option for your general shopping and is open 7/7. The Pohara General Store (750m) is perfect for all your smaller needs or fresh supplies such as bread, fruit and veggies.

Can you cater for dietary requirements?

We offer all the meals in our lodge in a buffet style allowing you to compose your meal the way you prefer. During our evening out we offer a fish-, meat- and vegetarian meal option. If you have specific nutritional preferences, you may wish to cook your own meals. Our well-equipped guest kitchen is available free of charge.

Are there any options to shorten the walks?

A shorter or even much shorter version of the walk is available for both walking days.

Day 2 of your hiking experience on Farewell Spit and Wharariki Beach, you can reduce the total walking distance to half of it or even less. If desired, the walk that day can even be splitted in two short walks of each one to one and a half hour and the time remaining filled in with other activities or attractions.

On Day 3 in the Abel Tasman National Park the previewed freedom walk along the northern part of the Park can be replaced by a shorter fly/cruise/walking experience in another part of the Park. This reduces the walking time that day to maximum three hours with a fantastic scenic flight on top of it. Click here for extra info and pricing.

What time should we book our flights to/from Takaka or Nelson?

The ideal arrival time on day 1 is between 3.00 and 5.00pm. Check-out time on day 4 is 10.00am but you are more than welcome to use our facilities until Midday. Those who prefer can also spend some extra time in Takaka or Golden Bay to visit our other world-famous nature attractions and book a bus or flight later in the afternoon.

Golden Bay Air

During the summer season (14 Oct – 14 Mar) Golden Bay Air is flying from Nelson or Wellington & visa-versa 4-5 times a week (Wednesdays & Sundays only on special request).

Flight options on your arrival day

Nelson-Takaka: 9.40am (NSN) – 10.10 (TAK) or 3.20pm (NSN) – 3.50pm (TAK)

Wellington-Takaka: 9.10am (WTN) – 10.15 (TAK) or 6.10pm (WTN) – 7.15pm (TAK)

Flight options on your departure day

Takaka-Nelson: 8.40am (TAK) – 9.10am (NSN) or 2.20pm (TAK) – 2.50pm (NSN)

Takaka-Wellington: 4.30pm (TAK) – 5.35pm (WTN)


Golden Bay Coachlines

Our local bus company is operating on a daily base between Nelson Airport and Golden Bay. The trip takes about 3 hours.

Nelson Airport – Takaka i-site: 3.15pm (NSN) – 6.10pm (TAK)

Pohara – Nelson Airport: 12.45pm (POH) – 3.15pm (NSN)

Rental car

If you have booked a rental car for your transfers between Nelson and Golden Bay, keep in mind that the driving time between the two locations is 2 hours. If you prefer, we can make this rental car booking for you with no extra reservation cost and at a special rate. On top of that we only use reliable rental companies with a modern and worry-free fleet.

Is there off road parking space?

Yes, there is. Each Suite has its own private and safe parking area.

What is the arrival & departure time for the Diamant Walking Package?

We are very flexible in our pick-up times from Nelson Airport and will adapt to your arrival time at Nelson Airport. Anything from midday to mid-afternoon works in perfectly with our walking program. The transfer from Nelson to Golden Bay takes roughly two hours.

For your scenic flight from Golden Bay to Nelson on day 4, the normal check-in time is 2.00pm.

What is the minimum/maximum number of participants for The Bay Walk?

Because of our intimate character and the exclusive walking experience we like to offer, we keep the group size down to a maximum of 6 hikers split over our three Suites. Each Suite has a Queen or King Bed and a maximum capacity of 2 guests.

Are there any options for non-walkers?

Non-walkers can enjoy all the facilities of our lodge and entertain themselves with all the attractions that surround us. Pohara Beach is only a 10-minute downhill walk from our lodge and offers many flat and short walk options. Non-walkers can have an exciting day by participating in one of our guided tours (4×4 Sandspit tour, Guided Sea Kayak tour or Fly/Walk Abel Tasman Experience). Without any cost they can also join our driver to the drop-off and pick-up points of our walks and enjoy our wonderful scenery in a more relaxing way.

Do I need to bring extra snacks or drinks?

A beloved snack is always handy during the walks and may not be available from our lodge or local store. So maybe worth to take with you. Same reasoning if you have special dietary requirements. Filtered drinking water is available from the lodge and from most start and end points of our walks. The honesty bar of our lodge is filled with a wide selection of local drinks at super democratic prices. For this reason it is not really worth the care and worry of carrying bottles all the way from home or the supermarket.

Do I need personal transport?

Not really. All transfers to and from the walks are included in our packages. We can organize free pick-ups from Takaka Airport (flight) or the Takaka i-site (bus). In our Diamant Walking Package all flights & transfers between our lodge and Nelson Airport are included. This means that you only need to book your flights between your home city and Nelson.

Can I cancel without any cost?

Can I bring my dog?

We really love cats and dogs ourselves but due to our location and the setup of our lodge unfortunately we can’t allow any domestic animals during your stay.

Is there a minimum age to participate in the walks?

Our lodge and our direct environment are a safe and peaceful haven in Pohara. On some parts of our walks the terrain is lightly challenging with cliffs, a possible strong headwind and some steeper uphill parts. For these reasons and for their own safety we prefer to accommodate only children over the age of 13 years.

Are there toilets or shelters on the tracks?

On day 2 there are toilet facilities at the start and the end of the walking track.

On day 3 there are toilet facilities, a shelter and filtered water at the start, halfway and at the end of the walking track.

Can I extend my 4-day walking experience?

Yes, you can. The Bay and our Lodge have so much on offer that you may be tempted to book an extra night in our Lodge. Perfect to relax or to enjoy our other world-famous attractions. The booking of these extra night(s) is easy. First check our availability calendar on our website and then book the nights and Suite you like to stay in. Finish your reservation with your preferred add-on walking package and you are ready to go!
